England captain Ben Stokes returned to his team today at Trent Bridge after missing the second Test due to a nightclub incident. Stokes officially apologised to his teammates for his actions before the series-deciding match against New Zealand.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) previously made him unavailable for selection following a curfew breach in London. Meanwhile, the England squad prepares for the final match of the series, which starts on Thursday, 25 June 2026.
Stokes Takes Full Responsibility for Actions
Ben Stokes told reporters he had to be man enough to own up to his mistakes. When he came back to the dressing room he talked to the whole squad. Specifically, he wanted to talk about how his absence affected the team and its players. He admitted that his first act as returning captain was to say sorry to everyone involved.

Stokes explained that leadership requires high levels of accountability. He noted that things are easy when the team is winning, but leaders must stand up during difficult times. Therefore, he looked his teammates in the eye to deliver his apology. He believes this was the only way to move forward properly as the leader of the group.
The captain felt particularly bad for the young players in the squad. Specifically, James Rew, Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker all made their Test debuts in the second Test. Stokes said his situation took the focus away from their big career moments. He called it stupid and naive to ignore how his actions affected those debutants.
Support for Joe Root After Difficult Week
Joe Root stepped in as captain during the second Test at The Oval. However, England suffered a heavy 253-run defeat under his leadership. Critics attacked Root for several tactical choices during the game. Stokes said it was very hard to watch his close friend face this public criticism.
Stokes praised Root for his courage in taking the job on short notice. Root had previously walked away from the captaincy, yet he put the team first when they needed him. Stokes admitted that seeing the negative reaction towards Root hurt him personally and professionally. He believes Root did not deserve the harsh words from the public.
Denying Rifts with Head Coach Brendon McCullum
Many people suggested there was a rift between Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. However, Stokes strongly denied these rumours. He described their relationship as very close and based on a deep friendship. He asked the public and media to give him a break regarding McCullum.
❌ “There’s been a big misconception around me & Brendan.”
❎ “Do we agree on everything? Absolutely not. Not agreeing on everything shouldn’t be seen as a divide.”

Stokes explained that they have a professional relationship as captain and coach, but they are also mates. They do not agree on every single thing, but this is normal in any job. Furthermore, they spoke almost every day during the recent investigation. Stokes mentioned that they can bond stronger over these difficult times.
Finding Form With Durham
While Stokes could not play for England, he played for Durham to regain his match fitness. He scored 95 runs from 118 balls against Northamptonshire in the County Championship. He hit several big shots before Harry Conway finally bowled him just after tea.
Stokes said the time away helped him clear his mind. He stopped overcomplicating his batting and simply reacted to the ball. Interestingly, he suggested that being on the front page for the wrong reasons might actually help his cricket. He felt a lot of love and support from the fans during his two weeks away from the national side.
