Kieron Pollard is now the all-time leading run-scorer in T20 cricket, surpassing Chris Gayle’s record that had stood since March 2014. The 39-year-old West Indian reached the milestone during a century for MI New York in Major League Cricket, finishing the innings with 14,583 career runs. Gayle ended on 14,562.
The century was only Pollard’s second in T20 cricket across 736 matches. MI New York lost the game against Washington Freedom by 30 runs, but the result was secondary to what Pollard had just done with the bat.
What Makes This Record Different From Most in Cricket
Records in batting are usually set by openers. They face the most balls, play the most innings in full, and have the clearest opportunity to accumulate runs across a long career. Of the top six on the all-time T20 run-scoring list, five are openers or top-order batters. Pollard is the only middle-order player among them.
That distinction matters. A middle-order batter enters the game at different stages, often with fewer balls remaining and the pressure of a required run rate already building. There are no settled starts, no powerplay field restrictions to exploit from ball one, and far less certainty about how long the innings will last. Pollard has spent his entire career operating in those conditions and still accumulated more T20 runs than anyone else who has ever played the format.
His 1,569 runs came in T20 internationals. The rest — the overwhelming majority — came through domestic and franchise competitions across leagues in the Caribbean, India, England, the United States, and beyond. Pollard has played T20 cricket on nearly every continent where the format exists, and he has scored runs consistently across all of them.
He also has the record for most T20 appearances, with 736 matches, a figure that speaks volumes about the sheer amount of cricket he has played and the demand for his services from franchise teams around the world.
Gayle’s Record Stood for Over 12 Years
Chris Gayle was top of the all-time T20 run-scoring standings from March 2014 until June 2026. During that time, he became the defining name in franchise cricket — a left-handed opener whose six-hitting and ability to take apart any bowling attack made him the most sought-after T20 player of his era. He holds the record for the most sixes in T20 cricket with 1,056. Pollard remains 70 behind that mark.
Gayle last played competitive T20 cricket in 2022. His record surviving four years after his last game speaks to how far clear of the field he was at his peak.
That gap has now closed, and the record could move again quickly. Alex Hales sits third on the all-time list, 134 runs behind Pollard. Jos Buttler is fourth, 212 runs back. Buttler has up to eight T20 internationals scheduled for England between July and September. Both men are active players with opportunities ahead of them this year.
Pollard Balances Playing and Coaching as Career Enters Final Chapter
Pollard is not just playing. This season, he served as batting coach for the Mumbai Indians during the Indian Premier League, working alongside players rather than simply competing against them. Later this summer, he steps into the head coach role at MI London for the men’s Hundred competition in England.
The dual role — player and coach — is unusual at the highest level of franchise cricket, but it fits the stage Pollard is at. He is 39, still contributing on the field when called upon, and simultaneously building the next phase of his career in the dugout.
The record against Washington Freedom adds to a career that was already defined by longevity. Few players have sustained relevance across T20 cricket for as long as Pollard has. He arrived in the format when it was still finding its identity and is now its all-time leading run-scorer as it heads into its third decade.
